Frequently Asked Questions about Hair Transplant Surgery

Are transplants really my own living, growing hair?

Yes. The surgical hair transplant method actually removes hair from the areas of the head that are not genetically predisposed to hair loss and transplants them to the areas that have lost hair.

Does it hurt to have transplants?

During the actual surgery, you will be under a local nerve block anesthesia and will feel no pain or discomfort. However, as with any surgery that requires sutures, there will be some discomfort as the incision heals. This discomfort is usually completely relieved with Tylenol.

What does it cost to have transplants?

Surgical hair transplants have the highest initial cost of any method of hair replacement. After all, it is surgery performed by an M.D. and surgical team. However, since it is your own hair, there are no long term costs associated with transplants. Over time, transplants are actually the least expensive form of hair replacement.

To quote an actual dollar figure without doing a consultation would be impossible. Each person’s hair loss is different and their expected results vary greatly. We offer free consultations and can give an exact cost after the evaluation process is complete.

Where does the transplanted hair come from?

The area of the head from the occipital bone to the hairline, at the neck, and between the back of the ears is genetically coded to grow hair as long as you are alive. This is the only area where hair can be harvested from for a transplant. Hair may not be donated from other people.

Will people be able to tell that I’ve had hair transplants?

The days of “doll hair” looking “plugs” are long gone. The latest hair transplant techniques are totally non-detectable and your transplanted hair will look natural even with the closest inspection.

How long does it take?

The surgery can take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours, depending on the size of the transplant areas. After the surgery there will be a recovery period of about 3 days with little or no activity, then another 10 days of no strenuous activity. This promotes the healing process and allows the grafts to seat properly.

Will I need to take off work?

That depends on the type of work you do and on what day of the week the procedure is done. It is important to be sedentary for 2-3 days after the surgery and to have limited physical activity for 10-14 days. It also is important to note that the site on the top of the head, where the hair was transplanted, will form scabs and be red and swollen for a few days. So, it really depends on what type of work a person does and how comfortable they are allowing the general public to see the transplant site.

Who performs the transplant procedure?

Transplants done by Apollo are performed by a board certified plastic surgeon.
