When people think of hair loss or balding, they usually think of men. And while, yes, it is much more common in men, it’s pretty common in women as well. Female-pattern hair loss (FPHL) is a hereditary condition that affects about 30 million American women, according to the America Academy of Dermatology, and is the most common kind of hair loss that we treat at Apollo Hair Replacement.
Typically, each time a normal hair follicle is shed, it is replaced by hair that is equal in size. But in women with female-pattern hair loss, the new hair is finer and thinner. It’s basically a more miniaturized version of itself, and as the hair follicles are shrinking, they eventually quit growing altogether.
Any woman can be affected by hair loss, but it is usually more common in:
-
Women older than 40.
-
Women who have just had babies.
-
Women who have had chemotherapy and other certain medications.
-
Women who often have hairstyles that pull on the hair roots or use harsh chemicals on their hair.
Most people lose between 50-100 hairs a day, with an average of about 80. However, if you’re consistently losing 150 hairs or more per day, then it is considered significant hair loss. Typically, when that happens, some hairs aren’t growing back and this is the onset of FPHL or a reactive issue.
When it comes to hair loss, there are so many potential triggers, making it harder to figure out exactly why your losing hair and which approach to take to remedy it.
On the genetic side of things, it’s a hereditary condition where you can use topical treatments, laser hair therapy, or even a hair transplant. But there are other reasons as well, called reactive hair loss. Reactive hair loss is your hair’s reaction to a crash diet, cutting carbohydrate or protein, or using chemicals on your hair. Your hair can react poorly to improper nutrients in your diet, and obviously to harsh chemicals. But it doesn’t happen to everyone, and it’s important to figure out why your hair is falling out in larger volumes and at a quicker pace than it normally should.
