Avoid These Products to Keep Your Hair Healthy

Keeping your hair healthy sometimes involves using different and new products, such as shampoos, masks, oils, and more. But not all of these products are safe or healthy for your hair, so you need to be mindful when choosing which products you’re going to use in those beautiful locks! So let’s talk about what can be harmful to your hair, and ways to avoid them!

Sulfates

Sulfates act as surfactants and basically minimize surface tension between your shampoo and skin. This helps your shampoo clean and remove dirt, oil and dead skin better. However, some other ingredients in shampoo can amplify sulfate effects and can do more damage than good by stripping away oils and proteins that are natural.

While sulfate can be good for your hair, when paired with other specific ingredients, it ends up being more harmful than helpful. It can cause hair to break off, dry it out, and even cause scalp irritation! Keep this in mind when shopping for your next new shampoo!

Heat

Do you flat iron or curl your hair? Do you use high heat on your blow dryer? Try turning the heat down when getting ready. High heat can already damage your hair, but then when you bake under the Texas sun, it causes even more damage than your hair tools. With summer in Texas quickly arriving, it’s smart to explore different ways to keep your hair from damaging heat. It’s also good to just braid it or go all natural some days to back off the heat a little bit. There are thousands of hair styles you can sport so you don’t damage those beautiful locks. Even taking colder showers can help keep your hair healthy when the heat is seemingly inescapable!

Isopropyl alcohol

There’s not really a “good and bad” situation with isopropyl alcohol. It’s a harsh chemical and is included in products like antifreeze and shellac. It dissolves oils, even natural ones, and dries your hair out completely. A lot of companies try to counteract it with moisturizing ingredients, but the isopropyl alcohol can typically override those ingredients. It’s bad news for your hair, and we recommend staying away from it! Also, if you somehow ingest isopropyl alcohol or any part of your product it’s included in (think shampoo running down your face in the shower), it could do harm to your body!
