Masters Week

The Masters… truly a tradition unlike any other. And it’s here! This week is Masters week, but no worries, we’re sticking to hair topics. It’s one of the greatest events in sports, but not only because of the money purse, the high profile athletes, or the most exclusive golf club in the world. It’s one of the greatest events because of the tradition that goes into it. Augusta National is one of the hardest places to visit, and almost impossible to actually play a round out there, no matter how hard you try. And believe me, I’ve tried. But I digress. So how could hair and golf possibly be related? Well, there are a few things that correlate between hair and golf. Let’s talk about ‘em!

Hats. Everybody likes a good hat. And it’s part of the golf attire. Hats help block the sun while you’re shanking golf balls off the tee, keep your hair in check during a round, and you can even clip ball markers to the bill! But what a lot of people don’t think about is the damage that hats can do to your hair. A round of golf takes about 4 hours (unless you’re Jordan Spieth, then it takes like 6 hours). So wearing a hat for 4+ hours at a time, multiple times, can cause significant damage to your hair! Your hair is a living, growing part of your body. Think of a brick on grass. If you leave a brick in your front yard all day, then remove it, the grass beneath it will be a different color, matted down, and on the verge of dying. The same goes for hats, but in a less dramatic fashion, and takes much longer than a day. But constantly wearing a hat has the same effect over the course of months and years. Try playing a round without a hat. You can wear sunglasses to block the sun, and apply sunscreen to your forehead and face to help protect your skin! Or you pull a Bubba Watson and rock that sweet visor to save damage to your hair! There are definitely options.

Next, the elements. Again, a round of golf is a long time outside. You sweat, get dirty (especially if you’re playing from the sand traps all day like me), and it could be windy, hot, and about a thousand other things. The dirt and sweat clog your pores on your scalp and can cause negative effects to your hair and hair growth. Windy rounds of golf can give your hair a beating, and so can the hot sun! We talked in another blog about keeping heat off your hair during the summer months, and this pertains to that same scenario! Be sure to condition your hair to strengthen it, so you can brave those hard Texas elements when golfing!
